{"id":"INC-github-r05vk75c594j","kind":"incident","aliases":[],"related":[],"title":"GitHub: Degradation in repos contents API","description":"On September 4, 2026, between approximately 21:45 and 22:07 UTC, some users experienced errors and elevated latency for repository operations. The incident was fully resolved at 22:23 UTC.The cause was a capacity change that spread one of our clusters across additional availability zones; our zone-aware traffic routing kept sending requests to the original zone for performance, overloading a small set of servers while the new capacity sat idle. We resolved the incident by reverting the change and letting traffic rebalance.We are improving per-zone capacity guarantees, cross-zone load-shedding, and pre-production testing of multi-zone changes to prevent recurrence.","summary":null,"severity":"medium","cvss":null,"epss":null,"exploited":false,"exploited_at":null,"products":[{"name":"GitHub","fixed":[],"affected":"","ecosystem":"vendor"}],"ecosystems":["vendor"],"tags":["ci","git","github","incident","ops","vendor"],"not_affected_if":[],"how_to_check":null,"fix":null,"status":"resolved","published_at":"2026-09-04T22:02:15+00:00","first_seen_at":"2026-10-23T19:12:22+00:00","triaged_at":"2026-10-23T21:50:49+00:00","updated_at":"2026-10-23T21:50:49+00:00","category":"vendor","confidence":null,"triage":null,"analyst_status":null,"analyst_note":null,"search":"'07':28C '2026':21C '21':24C '22':27C,46C '23':47C '4':20C '45':25C 'across':60C 'addit':61C 'api':6A 'approxim':23C 'avail':62C 'awar':67C 'capac':52C,88C,108C 'caus':49C 'chang':53C,98C,125C 'ci':12B 'cluster':59C 'content':5A 'cross':111C 'cross-zon':110C 'degrad':2A 'elev':35C 'error':33C 'experienc':32C 'fulli':43C 'git':13B 'github':1A,9A,11A,14B 'guarante':109C 'idl':90C 'improv':104C 'inc':8A 'inc-github-r05vk75c594j':7A 'incid':15B,41C,94C 'kept':70C 'latenc':36C 'let':100C 'load':114C 'load-shed':113C 'multi':123C 'multi-zon':122C 'new':87C 'one':56C 'op':16B 'oper':39C 'origin':75C 'overload':79C 'per':106C 'per-zon':105C 'perform':78C 'pre':118C 'pre-product':117C 'prevent':127C 'product':119C 'r05vk75c594j':10A 'rebalance.we':102C 'recurr':128C 'repo':4A 'repositori':38C 'request':72C 'resolv':44C,92C 'revert':96C 'rout':69C 'sat':89C 'send':71C 'septemb':19C 'server':84C 'set':82C 'shed':115C 'small':81C 'spread':55C 'test':120C 'traffic':68C,101C 'user':31C 'utc':29C 'utc.the':48C 'vendor':17B 'zone':63C,66C,76C,107C,112C,124C 'zone-awar':65C","nicknames":[],"mitigations":[],"who_affected":null,"tier":null,"verified":{},"analyst_revisit_at":null,"first_public_at":"2026-09-04T22:02:15+00:00","kev":null,"cvss_vector":null,"cvss_by":null,"poc_count":0,"sources":[{"source":"statuspage","external_id":"github:r05vk75c594j","url":"https://stspg.io/vhmsw2rhdcgv","severity":"medium","published_at":"2026-09-04T22:02:15+00:00","modified_at":"2026-09-15T23:34:38+00:00","first_seen_at":"2026-10-23T19:12:22+00:00","fetched_at":"2026-10-25T16:40:35+00:00","note":null}],"documents":[],"notice":"Free to read at a human pace.
