# devalue: Custom ArrayBuffer revivers can bypass typed-array allocation validation

devalue is a JavaScript library for serializing and parsing data, and versions up to 5.9.2 let a crafted small input make parse allocate very large ArrayBuffers when a custom ArrayBuffer reviver is used. An attacker who can supply the input can exhaust memory and crash the process (denial of service).

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- npm:devalue affected <= 5.9.2 fixed 5.9.3

## How to check

Run npm ls devalue to find installed versions and check whether any is 5.9.2 or lower.
Check whether code calls devalue.parse with a custom reviver that handles ArrayBuffer.

## Fix

Upgrade devalue to 5.9.3 or later.
Rebuild and redeploy after the upgrade.

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T19:11:32+00:00 ghsa https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-r9w8-h9r3-54w4

## From the sources

Under very specific circumstances, `parse` could create massive ArrayBuffers with very small input. This required a malformed `ArrayBuffer` custom reviver.
