# Linux kernel ntfs3: unhandled set_blocksize failure crashes NTFS mounts

In the Linux kernel's ntfs3 driver, a failed set_blocksize call is not handled, so mounting an NTFS volume with a block size larger than the page size hits a kernel BUG_ON. The sources describe a kernel crash on mount rather than any data access or code execution.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- `uname -r` to see the running kernel version and compare it with the fixed release in the NVD entry
- `lsmod | grep ntfs3` to check whether the ntfs3 driver is loaded
- unknown whether any other check is needed; the sources do not say

## Fix

- Update the Linux kernel to a release that includes the upstream ntfs3 set_blocksize fix; the exact fixed version is unknown from the sources
- Until patched, avoid mounting NTFS volumes with the ntfs3 driver if practical

## From the sources

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ntfs3: handle set_blocksize failures

ntfs3 uses buffer_heads, which don't handle block size > PAGE_SIZE well.
Without this, mounting we will hit the

        BUG_ON(offset >= folio_size(folio));

in folio_set_bh on the first __bread_gfp call.
