# WordPress ACF Extended plugin: unauthenticated visitors can take over admin accounts

The Advanced Custom Fields: Extended plugin and its PRO edition, before 0.9.2.8, mishandle the update-user action in the front-end Forms module. An unauthenticated visitor can bypass the guard on administrator accounts, take over the site administrator's account and receive a valid session for it.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed version of Advanced Custom Fields: Extended and Advanced Custom Fields: Extended PRO in the WordPress plugins screen; versions below `0.9.2.8` are affected.
- Check whether front-end forms are configured to update users, with two separate form configurations whose targets are mapped to visitor-submitted values (unknown whether other configurations are safe).

## Fix

- Update Advanced Custom Fields: Extended to `0.9.2.8` or later.
- Update Advanced Custom Fields: Extended PRO to `0.9.2.8` or later.

## Timeline

## From the sources

The Advanced Custom Fields: Extended WordPress plugin before 0.9.2.8, Advanced Custom Fields: Extended PRO WordPress plugin before 0.9.2.8 does not resolve the target of the update-user action in its front-end Forms module consistently between the stage that authorises the request and the stage that carries it out, which allows unauthenticated visitors to bypass the guard protecting administrator accounts, take over the site administrator's account and be issued a valid session for it. Exploitation requires the site to publish two separate front-end form configurations whose targets are mapped to visitor-submitted values.
