# arista velocloud orchestrator: VeloCloud Orchestrator (VCO) on-prem has a security issue where this issue may allow a remote attacker to access…

Improper input validation (CWE-20) in on-prem Arista VeloCloud Orchestrator, CVSS 3.1 10.0 / 4.0 9.5, actively exploited and in CISA KEV. An unauthenticated remote attacker with network access to the VCO web interface and the public part of a VeloCloud Edge authentication certificate can reach privileged internal functions on the VCO host. Only VCOs configured for certificate-based Edge authentication are exposed. Hosted and Dedicated VCO were already patched. A compromised VCO may give attackers access to Edge devices.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:VeloCloud Orchestrator On-Prem affected >= 5.2.0, <= 5.2.3.15; >= 6.1.0, <= 6.1.3.7; >= 6.4.0, <= 6.4.2.7; >= 7.0.0, <= 7.0.0.2 fixed 5.2.3.16, 6.4.2.8
- vendor:arista velocloud orchestrator affected >= 5.2.0, < 5.2.3.16 fixed 5.2.3.16
- vendor:arista velocloud orchestrator affected >= 6.1.0, <= 6.1.3.7 fixed ?
- vendor:arista velocloud orchestrator affected >= 6.4.0, < 6.4.2.8 fixed 6.4.2.8
- vendor:arista velocloud orchestrator affected >= 7.0.0, <= 7.0.0.2 fixed ?
- vendor:Arista VeloCloud Orchestrator affected ? fixed ?

## How to check

1) Check the VCO version against the affected list: 5.2.x up to 5.2.3.15, 6.1.x up to 6.1.3.7, 6.4.x up to 6.4.2.7, 7.0.x up to 7.0.0.2. 2) Check whether certificate-based Edge-to-VCO authentication is configured. 3) Hunt for IOCs: files /usr/local/sbin/.vcnode.js, /usr/local/sbin/vc-sysmond (md5 dc78e206eaeadec59fc5801fe4556bd0) and /etc/systemd/system/vc-sysmon.service; the x-vc-opt header in nginx logs; connections from 142.93.149.77 and 104.248.126.159; unexpected outbound HTTP(S) from the VCO host. If found, preserve state and contact Arista TAC.

## Fix

Upgrade to VCO 5.2.3.16 or later (5.2.3 train) or 6.4.2.8 or later (6.4.2 train). No fixed build for the 6.1 and 7.0 trains was listed in the advisory I read; check the advisory for updates. Until patched, restrict the VCO web interface to trusted admin networks, block unneeded outbound ports, and monitor for backdoor daemons and webshells. After a suspected compromise, rotate credentials and certificates and restore from trusted sources. Unsupported trains: contact Arista TAC.

Fixed builds only for 5.2 and 6.4 trains as of the advisory; I did not re-check the page for later 6.1/7.0 fixes beyond this fetch. No PoC found; did not search X/Bluesky.

## From the sources

Arista VeloCloud Orchestrator (VCO) on-prem contains an improper input validation vulnerability that may allow a remote attacker to access privileged internal functionality and impact the VCO host. Successful exploitation may compromise the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the orchestrator and data managed by the orchestrator.

CISA required action: Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
