# WordPress Simple CAPTCHA Turnstile plugin: stored cross-site scripting via shortcode

The Simple CAPTCHA with Cloudflare Turnstile WordPress plugin up to version 1.44.3 does not sanitize the id attribute of its gravity-simple-turnstile shortcode correctly. An authenticated contributor can store a script in a page that runs in the browser of any visitor who opens it.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check whether the plugin is installed and its version, for example in the WordPress admin under Plugins, or with `wp plugin get <plugin-slug> --field=version` if WP-CLI is used.
- Search post and page content for the `[gravity-simple-turnstile` shortcode with an unusual id attribute.

## Fix

- Plugin version later than `1.44.3` (the sources do not name the exact fixed release).

## Timeline

## From the sources

The Simple CAPTCHA with Cloudflare Turnstile plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'id' attribute of the [gravity-simple-turnstile] shortcode in versions up to, and including, 1.44.3 This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on the shortcode attribute in the cfturnstile_gravity_shortcode() function: the value is filtered only by esc_html() and sanitize_text_field() (neither of which touches parentheses or dots) and then emitted via esc_js() in a raw JavaScript expression context outside any string literal (esc_js only escapes quotes, backslashes, and newlines). This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
