# OpenUSD: crafted USDC or USDZ file can run code via double free

OpenUSD, Pixar's 3D scene library, has a double free when it parses USDC and USDZ files, because it does not check that an object exists before freeing it again. An attacker who supplies a crafted file can execute code in the context of the process that opens it.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check whether OpenUSD is among your build or runtime dependencies, for example in your C++ package manifests or vendored sources.
- Check whether your code parses USDC or USDZ files from untrusted sources.

## Fix

- Patch linked from the advisory at github.com; the fixed version is not stated in these sources.

## Documents

## From the sources

Pixar Animation Studio OpenUSD Crate File Parsing Double Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Pixar Animation Studio OpenUSD. Interaction with this library is required to exploit this vulnerability but attack vectors may vary depending on the implementation.

The specific flaw exists within the parsing of USDC and USDZ files. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing further free operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-30428.
