# Quest Foglight for Databases: directory traversal lets authenticated users run code

Quest Foglight for Databases has a path validation flaw in its installLicense script. An authenticated attacker can use a crafted path to write files and execute code as SYSTEM.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:Foglight for Databases affected 8.2.0 (listed in CVE record); fixed in 8.3 fixed 8.3

## How to check

- In the Foglight web console (Help > About) or the installer on the Windows Management Server, read the installed Foglight version.
- Versions before 8.3 should be treated as affected; the CVE record lists 8.2.0 as affected.
- Also check any other Foglight instances you run, since ZDI published sibling path-traversal advisories (ZDI-26-856, -857, -858, -860) with the same fix.

## Fix

Upgrade Foglight for Databases to 8.3 (per ZDI-26-855 'Fixed in Foglight 8.3'; Quest's own advisory not found)

## Timeline

- 2026-11-04T00:52:36+00:00 analyst — ZDI-26-855 (third-party coordinator) states fixed in Foglight 8.3; CVE record lists 8.2.0 affected. No Quest advisory found, so nothing marked verified. No known exploitation or PoC.

## From the sources

Quest Foglight for Databases installLicense Directory Traversal Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Quest Foglight for Databases. Authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability.

The specific flaw exists within the installLicense script. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of a user-supplied path prior to using it in file operations. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of SYSTEM. Was ZDI-CAN-29215.
