# Apache OpenOffice: crafted PDF import causes memory corruption and crashes

Apache OpenOffice up to 4.1.16 has an uncontrolled memory access in its PDF import code. A crafted PDF file can trigger an out-of-bounds memory write that crashes the program or corrupts memory.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed OpenOffice version under Help > About, or run `soffice --version` on the machine.
- Flag any install at `4.1.16` or earlier.

## Fix

- Apache OpenOffice: upgrade to `4.1.17`.

## Timeline

## From the sources

An uncontrolled memory access in the PDF import code of Apache OpenOffice versions through 4.1.16 allows a crafted PDF to cause an out-of-bounds memory write, causing program crash or memory corruption.
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.1.17, which fixes this issue.
