# Oracle VirtualBox 7.2.16: local low-privilege user can crash host

A flaw in the Core component of Oracle VM VirtualBox lets a low-privileged user who can log on to the host hang or repeatedly crash VirtualBox. The sources describe availability impact only, with no confidentiality or integrity loss.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `VBoxManage --version` on each host and compare against the fixed release in the Oracle advisory
- Confirm the affected version is `7.2.16` if the output matches

## Fix

- Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to the patched release listed in the Oracle Critical Patch Update advisory (version unknown from sources)

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T21:57:25+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-87311

## From the sources

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). The supported version that is affected is 7.2.16. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 5.6 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H).
