# Oracle VirtualBox 7.2.16: local low-privilege user can crash host

A flaw in the Core component of Oracle VM VirtualBox 7.2.16 lets a low-privileged user who can log on to the host cause a hang or repeatable crash of VirtualBox. The attack needs a second person to interact with the product, and the sources describe only availability impact.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `VBoxManage --version` on each host and compare against `7.2.16`.
- Check whether VirtualBox is installed on machines where untrusted users have logon access.

## Fix

- Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to the fixed release listed in Oracle's Critical Patch Update advisory for CVE-2026-87303 (unknown from the sources).

## From the sources

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). The supported version that is affected is 7.2.16. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 5.9 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H).
