# Apple iOS, macOS: out-of-bounds write can crash the system

An out-of-bounds write flaw in Apple's operating systems lets an app trigger an unexpected system termination. The description names only denial of service; it does not say code execution is possible.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the device version in Settings > General > About (iOS and iPadOS) or Apple menu > About This Mac (macOS)
- Compare against the fixed builds: `iOS 26.7`, `iPadOS 26.7`, `macOS Sequoia 15.8`, `macOS Tahoe 26.7`

## Fix

- Update iOS and iPadOS to `26.7` or later
- Update macOS Sequoia to `15.8` or later, and macOS Tahoe to `26.7` or later

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T21:57:19+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-86944

## From the sources

An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking. This issue is fixed in iOS 26.7 and iPadOS 26.7, macOS Sequoia 15.8, macOS Tahoe 26.7. An app may be able to cause unexpected system termination.
