# Dell PowerProtect Data Domain: OS command injection lets a privileged user run commands

Several Dell PowerProtect Data Domain releases contain an OS command injection flaw in which special characters are not neutralized before being passed to the operating system. A high-privileged attacker with remote access could run commands on the appliance.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed release version on the Data Domain system against the affected ranges in the description: `7.7.1.0` through `8.8`, `7.13.1.0` through `7.13.1.80`, `8.3.1.0` through `8.3.1.40`, `8.6.1.0` through `8.6.1.20`
- Confirm which accounts hold high-privilege roles on the appliance; the sources do not name a specific setting or command to inspect

## Fix

- Move Data Domain systems to a fixed release from Dell's advisory; the sources do not list the fixed version numbers
- Until patched, restrict high-privilege and remote administrative access to trusted management networks

## Timeline

## From the sources

Dell PowerProtect Data Domain, Feature Release versions 7.7.1.0 through 8.8, LTS2024 release versions 7.13.1.0 through 7.13.1.80, LTS2025 release versions 8.3.1.0 through 8.3.1.40, LTS2026 release versions 8.6.1.0 through 8.6.1.20, contain an Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') vulnerability. A high privileged attacker with remote access could potentially exploit this vulnerability, leading to Command execution.
