# Dell PowerProtect Data Domain: OS command injection lets a privileged user run commands

Several Dell PowerProtect Data Domain release lines contain an OS command injection flaw, where special characters in input reach the operating system shell. An attacker with high privileges and remote access can execute commands on the appliance.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed Data Domain OS version against the affected ranges listed in the advisory (Feature Release 7.7.1.0 through 8.8, LTS2024 7.13.1.0 through 7.13.1.80, LTS2025 8.3.1.0 through 8.3.1.40, LTS2026 8.6.1.0 through 8.6.1.20).
- Check which accounts hold high privileges on the appliance and who can reach its management interface remotely.

## Fix

- Move Dell PowerProtect Data Domain to a fixed release from Dell's advisory for your release line; the sources do not list the fixed version numbers, so unknown.
- Restrict remote management access to the appliance to trusted networks while the update is pending.

## From the sources

Dell PowerProtect Data Domain, Feature Release versions 7.7.1.0 through 8.8, LTS2024 release versions 7.13.1.0 through 7.13.1.80, LTS2025 release versions 8.3.1.0 through 8.3.1.40, LTS2026 release versions 8.6.1.0 through 8.6.1.20, contain an Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') vulnerability. A high privileged attacker with remote access could potentially exploit this vulnerability, leading to Command execution.
