# Heap-based buffer overflow in Windows ALPC allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally

Heap-based buffer overflow in Windows ALPC. Code running in a low-privilege AppContainer can escape the sandbox and gain SYSTEM locally, with no user interaction. Microsoft reports exploitation detected; it is not publicly disclosed. Fixed in the Sep 8 2026 updates. CVSS 7.8.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

Run winver, or in PowerShell: [System.Environment]::OSVersion.Version. Compare the full build number with the fixed build, e.g. Win10 22H2 10.0.19045.7725, Server 2016/Win10 1607 10.0.14393.9512, Server 2012 R2 6.3.9600.23398, Server 2012 6.2.9200.26349. Or check that the Sep 2026 cumulative update is installed: Get-HotFix -Id KB5122878 (Win10 21H2/22H2), KB5122876 (1809), KB5123099 (2016/1607), KB5123066 (2012 R2), KB5123065 (2012), KB5122882 (Server 2022).

## Fix

Install the Sep 8 2026 Windows cumulative or monthly rollup update. KBs: KB5122878 (Win10 21H2/22H2), KB5122876 (Win10 1809 and Server 2019), KB5123099 (Server 2016 and Win10 1607), KB5123066 (Server 2012 R2), KB5123065 (Server 2012), KB5122882 (Server 2022). No workaround was found. CISA required action: apply the update under BOD 26-04 and the forensics triage requirements.

## From the sources

Microsoft Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call contains a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability that allows an attacker to elevate privileges locally.

CISA required action: Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
