# Apple: crafted image causes heap corruption across iOS and macOS

A buffer overflow in Apple's image processing lets a maliciously crafted image corrupt heap memory. The sources do not say what an attacker can do beyond that, such as running code.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the OS version on each Apple device (Settings > General > About, or `sw_vers -productVersion` on macOS)
- Compare against the fixed versions: iOS 26.7.2, iPadOS 26.7.2, macOS Tahoe 26.7.2, macOS Sequoia 15.8, visionOS 27
- unknown for whether any specific app or workflow processes images in the affected path

## Fix

- Update iOS and iPadOS to `26.7.2` or later, or to iOS 27 / iPadOS 27
- Update macOS Tahoe to `26.7.2` or later, or macOS Sequoia to `15.8` or later
- Update visionOS to 27
- Update macOS Golden Gate 27 to the release that includes the fix

## From the sources

A buffer overflow was addressed with improved bounds checking. This issue is fixed in iOS 26.7.2 and iPadOS 26.7.2, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Sequoia 15.8, macOS Tahoe 26.7.2, visionOS 27. Processing a maliciously crafted image may lead to heap corruption.
