# Apple macOS: opening a network-share file may run unexpected software

A logic flaw in macOS lets a file that references a network share cause unexpected software to execute when it is opened. An attacker who can place or point a user at such a file may get code run on the Mac.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the macOS version with `sw_vers -productVersion` and compare it with the fixed releases listed in the sources
- unknown for any other check, as the sources do not say

## Fix

- Update macOS to `27` (Golden Gate), `15.8` (Sequoia) or `26.7` (Tahoe) or later, as the sources list these as fixed releases

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T21:57:19+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-84579

## From the sources

A logic issue was addressed with improved checks. This issue is fixed in macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Sequoia 15.8, macOS Tahoe 26.7. Opening a file referencing a network share may lead to unexpected software execution.
