# Splunk Enterprise: low-privilege users can read or delete other users' preview jobs

Splunk Enterprise below 10.4.4 has a Data Management REST API that checks a user's capability but not whether a preview job belongs to that user. An authenticated user with the preview or edit pipeline capability can read or delete other users' Data Management SPL2 preview jobs and results.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Confirm the version with `splunk version` and check whether it is below `10.4.4`.
- Check whether the Edge Processor feature is turned on, since the affected Data Management REST API is only available when it is enabled.
- Review which roles hold `preview_data_management_pipeline` or `edit_data_management_pipeline_job`.

## Fix

- Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to `10.4.4` or later.
- Until upgraded, turn off the Edge Processor feature if it is not needed, or remove the pipeline preview capabilities from roles that do not need them.

## From the sources

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.4, a user that holds a role with the preview_data_management_pipeline capability or edit_data_management_pipeline_job capability could read or delete Data Management SPL2 preview jobs and results outside their ownership scope.
The vulnerability is possible because the Data Management Representational State Transfer (REST) API verifies the required capability but does not verify that the requested preview job belongs to the requester.
The affected Data Management REST API is available only when the Edge Processor feature is turned on. The Edge Processor feature is turned off by default.
