# Metabase allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to inject arbitrary SQL via the '/reset_password' database…

Unauthenticated SQL injection in POST /api/session/reset_password lets an attacker reach admin on self-hosted Metabase 0.58 and later (CVSS 10.0). Exploited in the wild as a 0-day and in CISA KEV. Metabase Cloud was patched by the vendor. Versions before 0.58 are not affected.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

Find your version under gear/grid icon > About Metabase. Affected if 0.58 to 0.63 and below the fixed point release for your line. Search ingress/app logs for POST /api/session/reset_password returning 400 followed by GET /api/user/current returning 200: that pattern means likely compromise.

## Fix

Upgrade to 0.58.24, 0.59.21, 0.60.17, 0.61.11, 0.62.9 or 0.63.5 (or later in your line). Workaround: block /api/session/reset_password. If it was publicly reachable, after upgrading also delete all rows in core_session, delete unknown API keys, review admin accounts, rotate connected database credentials, and review warehouse logs.

Note GHSA affected upper bounds (e.g. <58.23) are lower than patched versions (58.24); used patched versions as the safe line. ## From the sources

Metabase contains a SQL Injection vulnerability that allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to inject arbitrary SQL into the Metabase application database, which can give them administrator access to the instance. From there, the attacker could change the application configuration, steal stored credentials for the connected databases, read any data accessible through those connections, and export data.

CISA required action: Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
