# openEQUELLA: pre-login notice lets script run on the login page

openEQUELLA renders the pre-login notice as raw HTML on the legacy logon page without encoding or sanitisation. A user with the EDIT_SYSTEM_SETTINGS permission can store a script in the notice, which runs in the browser of anyone who loads the login page.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the openEQUELLA version in the deployment; affected versions are before `2026.2`.
- Check whether the guest user or the Everyone group holds EDIT_SYSTEM_SETTINGS, since that allows unauthenticated exploitation.
- Review the current pre-login notice content via the admin settings for embedded script tags or event handlers.

## Fix

- Upgrade openEQUELLA to `2026.2` or later.
- Remove EDIT_SYSTEM_SETTINGS from the guest user and the Everyone group.
- Rotate credentials for any administrator accounts if a suspicious notice was found.

## Timeline

- 2026-10-29T02:36:48+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-66092

## From the sources

In openEQUELLA before 2026.2, the pre-login notice is stored as HTML and rendered on the legacy logon page without encoding or sanitisation. A user holding the EDIT_SYSTEM_SETTINGS permission can set a notice containing an arbitrary script (PUT /api/preloginnotice), resulting in stored cross-site scripting on the login page. Unauthenticated exploitation is possible where EDIT_SYSTEM_SETTINGS has been granted to the guest user or Everyone
