# vmware vcenter server: VMware vCenter contains a directory traversal vulnerability in the Syslog server

A path traversal flaw in Broadcom VMware vCenter lets an attacker with network access to vCenter execute arbitrary code. CISA lists it as actively exploited in the wild, with ransomware use noted in the tags.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:Broadcom VMware vCenter affected ? fixed ?
- vendor:vmware vcenter server affected < 8.0 fixed 8.0
- vendor:vmware vcenter server affected = 8.0 fixed ?
- vendor:vmware vcenter server affected >= 9.0, < 9.0.2.0100 fixed 9.0.2.0100
- vendor:vmware vcenter server affected >= 9.1, < 9.1.0.0300 fixed 9.1.0.0300

## How to check

Identify your vCenter version and build from the vSphere Client or the VAMI page; compare against the fixed builds in the Broadcom advisory. Review vCenter access and logs for unexpected file access or unknown processes.

## Fix

Apply the Broadcom VMware vCenter patch or mitigation per the vendor advisory, then follow CISA BOD 26-04 guidance and the Forensics Triage Requirements. If no mitigation is available, discontinue use of the affected product per CISA direction.

## From the sources

Broadcom VMware vCenter contains a path traversal vulnerability which could allow a threat actor with network access to vCenter to execute arbitrary code.

CISA required action: Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
