# LORIS: imaging browser API skips edit permission checks, letting users alter data

LORIS, a self-hosted neuroimaging research web application, has an API for the imaging_browser module that accepts edits to imaging data without enforcing the frontend edit permissions. An authenticated API caller can modify imaging data they are not authorized to edit.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed LORIS version and see whether it is in `22.0.0` to before `27.0.4`, or `28.0.0` to before `28.0.2`.
- Check whether the API is in use for the imaging_browser module (unknown whether the sources give a specific setting or path to inspect).

## Fix

- LORIS `27.0.4` for the 27.x line
- LORIS `28.0.2` for the 28.x line
- Sources also say the API can be disabled if no longer used.

## From the sources

LORIS (Longitudinal Online Research and Imaging System) is a self-hosted web application that provides data- and project-management for neuroimaging research. In versions from 22.0.0 prior to 27.0.4 and from 28.0.0 prior to 28.0.2, the `API` for the `imaging_browser` module permits edits to imaging data without checking the frontend permissions that restrict editing in Imaging Browser. An authenticated `API` caller can therefore modify imaging data without the required edit authorization. Deployments that no longer use the `API` can disable it to remove access to this endpoint. This issue is fixed in versions 27.0.4 and 28.0.2.
