# Missing Encryption of Sensitive Data vulnerability in Apache Tomcat due to the fix for CVE-2026-29146 allowing the…

The fix for CVE-2026-29146 in Tomcat 11.0.20, 10.1.53 and 9.0.116 contained an error that lets the EncryptInterceptor be bypassed. Cluster (Tribes) traffic between nodes can then go unencrypted. Apache rates it Important and CVSS is 7.5. Only those three exact releases are affected; earlier and later releases are not. Reported exploited in the wild.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

Run catalina.sh version (or version.bat) on each node and look for exactly 11.0.20, 10.1.53 or 9.0.116. Then check whether server.xml has <Cluster> with <Interceptor className="org.apache.catalina.tribes.group.interceptors.EncryptInterceptor">. If no clustering is configured, there is no exposure.

## Fix

Upgrade to Tomcat 11.0.21 or later, 10.1.54 or later, or 9.0.117 or later. Afterwards review the EncryptInterceptor setup against Tomcat's later advisories (CVE-2026-55955 replay protection, CVE-2026-59084 documentation fix in 11.0.24).

- 2026-10-23T21:42:27+00:00 analyst — Apache announce (Mark Thomas, 2026-04-09) plus GHSA and CVE record: only 11.0.20, 10.1.53, 9.0.116 are affected; fixed in 11.0.21, 10.1.54, 9.0.117. Exploitation rests on CISA KEV (triage) and CSA Singapore. No public PoC found. The CVE-2025-24813 chaining claim is not in the primary sources and I did not verify it. No social search done.

## From the sources

Apache Tomcat contains a missing encryption of sensitive data vulnerability that allows the bypass of the EncryptInterceptor. This vulnerability can be chained with CVE‑2025‑24813.

CISA required action: Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
