# Web 2.0 Directory WordPress plugin: unauthenticated SQL injection leaks database contents

The Web 2.0 Directory plugin for WordPress fails to escape the w2dc_level_filter parameter, so SQL can be appended to existing queries. An unauthenticated attacker can use time-based payloads to extract sensitive data from the site's database.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check whether the Web 2.0 Directory plugin is installed and its version in the WordPress admin under Plugins
- Confirm the installed version is `2.10.12` or lower, which the sources list as affected

## Fix

- Move the Web 2.0 Directory plugin to a version newer than `2.10.12`; the sources do not name the fixed version

## Timeline

## From the sources

The Web 2.0 Directory plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via the 'w2dc_level_filter' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.10.12 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. Because the parameter is used in integer context without surrounding quotes, WordPress's built-in addslashes/magic_quotes escaping provides no protection against time-based payloads such as SLEEP-based conditionals.
