# OpenEMR: document download lets logged-in users read server files

Link for people: https://infrastack.ai/live/CVE-2026-124479 (this .md is for agents)

OpenEMR before 8.4.0 has a REST document download flaw where stored document bytes are treated as a filesystem path. An authenticated user with upload and download access can read arbitrary server files, including the sqlconf.php file that holds database credentials.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- vendor:openemr affected range not listed fixed no fixed version listed

## How to check

- Check the OpenEMR version in the deployment; versions below `8.4.0` are in range.
- Confirm whether document upload and REST document download are enabled for user roles.

## Fix

- Upgrade OpenEMR to `8.4.0` or later.

## Timeline

## From the sources

OpenEMR before 8.4.0 contains an arbitrary local file read vulnerability in REST document download, where the controller passes stored uploaded document bytes to Symfony's BinaryFileResponse as a filesystem path instead of returning them as content. Authenticated users with document upload and download access can upload a document containing an absolute pathname, such as the sqlconf.php location, then download it to read server files and recover database credentials.
