# VVdeC: crafted VVC bitstream makes the decoder read out of bounds

Link for people: https://infrastack.ai/live/CVE-2026-124312 (this .md is for agents)

VVdeC, Fraunhofer's VVC video decoder, reads past a heap buffer when a crafted bitstream uses a smaller collocated reference picture with error concealment enabled. An attacker can crash the decoder by supplying such a video stream.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed VVdeC version against the range through 3.2.1 in the sources.
- Check whether error concealment is enabled in the decoder configuration: unknown if the sources do not say how to set it.

- [fix] Patch: github.com https://github.com/fraunhoferhhi/vvdec/commit/0695c06221c27b3680fec9851ac2cf46b2195ea9

## From the sources

Fraunhofer HHI VVdeC through 3.2.1 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability that allows attackers to crash the decoder by supplying a collocated picture of different resolution. Attackers can craft a VVC bitstream enabling TMVP with a smaller collocated reference picture, causing getColInfo to read past the colMotion allocation when error concealment is enabled.
