# imgproxy: crafted ICO file exhausts memory and crashes workers

Link for people: https://infrastack.ai/live/CVE-2026-123616 (this .md is for agents)

imgproxy, an image processing server, fails to validate the data_size field in its ICO image loader. A crafted 23-byte ICO file declaring about 4GB of data can exhaust memory and crash worker processes.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the imgproxy version the server runs, for example with `imgproxy -v` or the container image tag.
- Confirm whether the instance accepts remote image URLs from outside your network.

## Fix

- imgproxy from `3.3.0` before `4.0.16`: move to `4.0.16` or later.

## From the sources

imgproxy from 3.3.0 before 4.0.16 contains an unbounded memory allocation vulnerability in the ICO loader that fails to validate the data_size field. Attackers can supply a crafted 23-byte ICO file declaring a ~4GB data_size to trigger memory exhaustion and worker crashes without authentication.
