# hickory-dns: DNS-over-QUIC server holds connections open, causing denial of service

Link for people: https://infrastack.ai/live/CVE-2026-123589 (this .md is for agents)

The DNS-over-QUIC server in hickory-server applies no timeout when reading a request from a QUIC stream, so it ignores its configured timeouts. A remote client without credentials can hold a stream open indefinitely, using up server resources and causing a denial of service.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the `hickory-server` version in your Cargo.lock or dependency tree; affected releases are before `0.26.2`.
- Check whether the DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) listener is enabled in your hickory-dns configuration.

## Fix

- `hickory-server` `0.26.2`

## Timeline

## From the sources

The DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) server in hickory-server (hickory-dns) before 0.26.2 does not apply any timeout when reading a request message from a QUIC stream, bypassing all configured timeouts. A remote unauthenticated client can open a connection and a request stream and hold it open indefinitely, consuming server resources and causing a denial of service.
