# VRPN: out-of-bounds stack write lets remote peers crash the process

VRPN, a library for networking virtual reality devices, has an out-of-bounds stack write in its sender and type message handlers. An unauthenticated remote peer can crash the process by sending a malformed description message with an out-of-range or negative index.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check whether any system runs VRPN at or before version `07.36`, the range the description names.
- Look for VRPN servers or endpoints reachable from untrusted networks.

## Fix

- A patch is linked from github.com; the sources do not state the fixed version.

## From the sources

VRPN through 07.36 contains an out-of-bounds stack write vulnerability in vrpn_Endpoint::handle_sender_message() and handle_type_message() that allows unauthenticated remote peers to write outside a stack buffer via an unchecked length index. Attackers can connect, complete the version-cookie exchange, and send a SENDER_DESCRIPTION or TYPE_DESCRIPTION message with an out-of-range or negative index to crash the process.
