# Outline: authenticated members can publish documents into private collections

Outline versions before 1.12.0 let a logged-in member publish documents into private collections they cannot write to. An attacker can use this to place phishing content inside a private collection.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed Outline version (for example in the deployment's package or image tag) and compare it with `1.12.0`.
- Confirm whether the instance allows members to create or publish documents at all.

## Fix

- Move Outline to `1.12.0` or later.

## From the sources

Outline before 1.12.0 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability in authorizeDocumentPublish() that allows authenticated members to publish documents into private collections without write access. Attackers can detach a child document via documents.unpublish, retaining parentDocumentId, then call documents.update with a private collection UUID to inject phishing content.
