# Netpbm: crafted PICT file overflows stack in picttoppm, enabling code execution

Netpbm's picttoppm tool does not bound the number of polygon points in a PICT file, so a polygon with more than 100 points overwrites a fixed stack array. An attacker who supplies a crafted PICT file can crash the tool or potentially run code.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed Netpbm version (for example with `pnmcat --version` or your package manager's query) and compare it with the fixed ranges below.
- Look for the `picttoppm` binary and whether your pipelines or services convert PICT files with it.

## Fix

- Netpbm `10.86.51` or later in the 10.x line
- Netpbm `11.02.30` or later in the 11.02 line
- Netpbm `11.15.08` or later in the 11.x line from 11.03

## Documents

- [advisory] Third-party advisory: www.vulncheck.com https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/netpbm-before-10.86.51-11.02.30-and-11.15.08-picttoppm-stack-buffer-overflow-via-paintpoly

## From the sources

Netpbm before 10.86.51, 11.x before 11.02.30, and 11.03 before 11.15.08 contains a stack-based buffer overflow in the picttoppm paintPoly() function due to an unbounded polygon point count. Attackers can supply a crafted PICT file with a polygon exceeding 100 points to overwrite the fixed pts array, causing crashes or potentially code execution.
