# GIMP: crafted PSD file overflows a stack buffer and can run code

GIMP's PSD plug-in copies a converted image resource name into a fixed stack buffer using the wrong size. Opening a crafted PSD file can crash GIMP or potentially run arbitrary code.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

Run gimp --version (or Help > About). No affected range is published yet; treat any GIMP that can import PSD as exposed until upstream issue #16799 or your distro lists a fixed build.

## Timeline

- 2026-10-30T14:33:51+00:00 analyst — Red Hat advisory read (Important, CWE-121, upstream issue gitlab.gnome.org GIMP #16799, unreadable via web-cli). No affected/fixed versions found on any page; fix unknown, left unverified. Mitigation per Red Hat: do not open untrusted PSD, avoid browsing PSD dirs in file dialog (thumbnails), remove gimp if unneeded.

## Documents

- [advisory] Red Hat CVE-2026-119528 https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-119528

## From the sources

A flaw was found in GIMP. The PSD plug-in’s image resource header loader uses an incorrect destination size when copying a converted resource name into a fixed stack buffer. Opening a crafted PSD file can cause a stack-based buffer overflow, leading to a crash and potentially arbitrary code execution.
