# FreeMail: authenticated users can take over other users' mailboxes

FreeMail before 5.3.2 lets any logged-in user claim an existing mailbox belonging to another user through the POST /api/create endpoint. The attacker can then read that person's mail and verification codes, set forwarding, and delete messages.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the FreeMail version in use; affected if below `5.3.2`
- Look for the `/api/create` endpoint and whether it accepts an existing mailbox address for a non-owner account

## Fix

- FreeMail: upgrade to `5.3.2` or later

## Timeline

- 2026-10-29T14:25:23+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-119049

## From the sources

FreeMail before 5.3.2 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows authenticated users to claim another user's existing mailbox via the POST /api/create endpoint. Attackers who know a victim's address can become co-owners through assignMailboxToUser to read messages and verification codes, set forwarding, and delete mail.
