# Alpine iLX-F511 car head unit: stack overflow lets physical attacker run root code

The framework service on Alpine iLX-F511 devices copies user-supplied data into a fixed-length stack buffer without checking its length. A physically present attacker can exploit this to execute arbitrary code as root.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## From the sources

Alpine iLX-F511 Framework Service Stack-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows physically present attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Alpine iLX-F511 devices. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability.

The specific flaw exists within the framework service. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a fixed-length stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of root. Was ZDI-CAN-29007.
