# REDAXO: missing authorization lets backend users manage packages and drop tables

REDAXO core before 5.21.5 lets non-admin backend users install, activate, deactivate, and uninstall packages through the rex_api_package API using only a valid CSRF token. An attacker can uninstall system addons such as structure, which drops their database tables, and delete non-system packages.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed REDAXO core version in `redaxo/src/core/boot.php` or the backend system page: unknown whether the sources name a specific file.
- Review which backend users have non-admin roles that still hold active sessions, since the description says demoted admins with live sessions are the main risk.

## Fix

- Upgrade REDAXO core to `5.21.5` or later.
- Until upgraded, restrict backend access to trusted users only.

## Timeline

## From the sources

REDAXO core before 5.21.5 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in the rex_api_package API function that lets non-admin backend users manage packages with only a valid CSRF token. Attackers holding a token, such as demoted admins with active sessions, can uninstall system addons like structure (dropping their database tables), deactivate, install, or activate packages, and delete non-system packages.
