# SemanticMediaWiki: stored XSS via unescaped property group name

Users with the smw-schemaedit right can save a property group schema whose canonical_name contains script markup. It renders unescaped on Special:Browse, so JavaScript runs in the sessions of anyone who views that page, including administrators.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed SemanticMediaWiki version in Special:Version or composer.lock; affected range is 3.2.0 through 7.3.0.
- Review property group schemas for canonical_name values containing HTML or script tags.

## Fix

- Upgrade SemanticMediaWiki to `7.3.1` or later.
- Until upgraded, restrict the smw-schemaedit right to trusted editors.

## Timeline

- 2026-10-27T11:31:27+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-116888

## From the sources

SemanticMediaWiki from 3.2.0 before 7.3.1 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows users with the smw-schemaedit right to inject markup through an unescaped property group schema canonical_name. Attackers can save a schema whose canonical_name holds script markup, which GroupFormatter renders unescaped in Special:Browse headings, executing JavaScript in viewers' sessions including administrators.
