# Xpdf: crafted JPEG 2000 image makes PDF viewer hang forever

Xpdf 4.06 and earlier loop forever when parsing a JPEG 2000 image with a bad progression order field. An attacker who gets a user to open a crafted PDF can freeze the viewer or a service that renders PDFs.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `xpdf -v` or check the installed Xpdf version and compare it with `4.06`
- Check whether your Linux distribution's `xpdf` package is listed in the advisory as affected: unknown

## Fix

- Move to a fixed Xpdf release newer than `4.06`: unknown (the sources do not name the fixed version)
- Until patched, avoid opening untrusted PDFs in Xpdf or any service that uses it for conversion: unknown

## Timeline

- 2026-10-26T21:20:32+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-116671

## From the sources

Infinite loop in Xpdf 4.06 and earlier, due to incorrect validation of progression order field in JPEG 2000 image.
