# github-kanban-mcp-server: OS command injection via issue list labels argument

The github-kanban-mcp-server MCP server up to 0.4.0 passes the state and labels arguments of its handleListIssues function into an operating system command without sanitizing them. A remote caller can inject shell commands and run them on the server hosting the MCP server.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `npm ls github-kanban-mcp-server` or check the version in package.json; affected versions are up to `0.4.0`
- Look for src/handlers/issue-handlers.ts and check whether handleListIssues builds a shell command from the state or labels arguments
- Check whether the MCP server is reachable from a network other than the local machine

## Fix

- Upgrade github-kanban-mcp-server to `0.4.1` or later (patch `253d93bbdf7ee9fe42bd8fdf15feea93ae59cbae`)
- Until upgraded, restrict network access to the MCP server and do not expose it to untrusted callers

## From the sources

A vulnerability was identified in Sunwood-ai-labs github-kanban-mcp-server up to 0.4.0. Impacted is the function handleListIssues of the file src/handlers/issue-handlers.ts. Such manipulation of the argument state/labels leads to os command injection. The attack can be launched remotely. Upgrading to version 0.4.1 is recommended to address this issue. The name of the patch is 253d93bbdf7ee9fe42bd8fdf15feea93ae59cbae. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
