# Ghidra: crafted zip extension archive can exhaust disk space

Ghidra before 12.2 unzips extension archives without size limits, so a crafted zip bomb expands until the disk is full. An attacker who gets a user to install that extension can make later writes by Ghidra and other applications fail.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `Ghidra` and check Help > About for the version; versions below `12.2` are affected.

## Fix

- Upgrade Ghidra to `12.2` or later.
- Only install extensions from trusted sources until upgraded.

## Timeline

- 2026-10-23T21:57:32+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-115503
- 2026-10-24T07:15:51+00:00 epss https://api.first.org/data/v1/epss?cve=CVE-2026-115503

## From the sources

Ghidra before 12.2 contains an improper handling of highly compressed data vulnerability in ExtensionUtils.unzipToInstallationFolder() that allows attackers to exhaust disk space. Attackers can persuade users to install a crafted zip bomb extension archive that expands without size limits, causing later writes by Ghidra and other applications to fail.
