# OpenBao: child-namespace tokens can modify plugin registrations, causing denial of service

OpenBao from 2.3.0 before 2.6.3 lets a privileged token in a child namespace change plugin catalog registrations, because the /v1/sys/plugins/catalog/ endpoints are not limited to the root namespace. An attacker can delete registrations, create invalid ones, or register installed plugins, which can cause denial of service.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the OpenBao version with `bao version`; versions from 2.3.0 up to but not including 2.6.3 are affected.
- Check whether namespaces are in use with `bao namespace list`; the issue needs a child namespace with a privileged token.

## Fix

- Upgrade OpenBao to `2.6.3` or later.

## From the sources

OpenBao from 2.3.0 before 2.6.3 contains an improper authorization vulnerability that allows privileged child-namespace tokens to modify plugin registrations because /v1/sys/plugins/catalog/* is not restricted to the root namespace. Attackers can remove existing registrations, create invalid ones, or register installed plugins through a child namespace's sys/ mount, causing denial of service.
