# Netmaker: network users can take over WireGuard clients on other networks

Netmaker up to and including 1.7.0: updateExtClient uses an unscoped lookup (GetExtClientByName), so a user with external-client permission on one network can PUT /api/extclients/{other-network}/{clientid} to replace public keys, disable clients and read WireGuard private keys. CVSS 8.7 (v4) / 8.3 (v3.1). Needs a valid account with ext-client rights. Fixed on master by PR #4153; no tagged release with the fix found yet.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## Affected

- github:netmaker affected <= 1.7.0 fixed ?

## How to check

Run 'netmaker --version' or check the server image tag; 1.7.0 or earlier is affected. Check whether non-admin users hold external-client permissions on any network. Audit logs for PUT /api/extclients/{network}/{clientid} where the user is not scoped to that network.

## Fix

No patched release named yet. Build from master at or after commit 332d8b9bab030ee65e78b9141259e4e0e80ac4b0, or wait for the first release after v1.7.0. Until then, limit external-client permissions to trusted users. If abuse is suspected, rotate the keys of external clients.

No release after v1.7.0 seen on GitHub releases page, so no patched version is named; checked 2026-10-23. No public PoC or exploitation found; social search not done.

## From the sources

Netmaker through 1.7.0 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability in the updateExtClient handler that allows network-scoped users to modify external clients on other networks. Attackers with external client permissions on one network can send PUT requests to /api/extclients/{network}/{clientid} to replace public keys, disable clients, and obtain WireGuard private keys.
