# Roundcube Webmail: password plugin error text lets script run in webmail

Roundcube's password plugin inserts error text from a password backend into the page without HTML escaping. A backend that can influence that text, such as the DirectAdmin API, can inject script that runs in a user's Roundcube session.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed Roundcube version with `grep -i "version" /path/to/roundcube/program/include/iniset.php` (unknown exact command beyond this)
- Check whether the password plugin is enabled in `plugins/password/config.inc.php` and which driver is set
- Versions in scope: before `1.6.20` and `1.7.x` before `1.7.5`

## Fix

- Upgrade Roundcube to `1.6.20` or later on the 1.6 line, or `1.7.5` or later on the 1.7 line
- Or apply the upstream commit “Fix XSS issue in handling of password driver error responses”, which escapes the driver message before display

## From the sources

Roundcube Webmail before 1.6.20 and 1.7.x before 1.7.5 is affected by a cross-site scripting vulnerability in the password plugin. Error text returned by a password driver was concatenated into the message presented to the user without HTML escaping, so a backend able to influence that text, such as the DirectAdmin API, could inject script into the Roundcube interface. Upstream fixed this in the commit “Fix XSS issue in handling of password driver error responses”, which escapes the driver message before display.
