# Trudesk: authenticated users can overwrite files outside upload folder

Trudesk through 1.2.11 lets a logged-in user supply a crafted username during avatar upload to bypass the earlier path sanitization fix. The attacker can write png, jpg, jpeg or gif files to arbitrary locations outside public/uploads/users and overwrite other users' avatars.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed Trudesk version; versions through `1.2.11` are affected.
- Review whether accountsController.uploadImage is reachable on your instance and whether untrusted users hold accounts.

## Fix

- Upgrade Trudesk to a release newer than `1.2.11` once a fixed version is published; the sources do not name one.
- Until patched, restrict account creation and limit who can upload avatars.

## From the sources

Trudesk through 1.2.11 contains a path traversal and authorization bypass vulnerability in accountsController.uploadImage that allows authenticated users to overwrite other users' avatars via form-supplied _id and username fields. Attackers can supply a username like /../../../x to bypass the incomplete CVE-2022-1752 sanitization and write png, jpg, jpeg, or gif files outside public/uploads/users.
