# macOS: out-of-bounds read lets an app crash the system or read kernel memory

An out-of-bounds read in macOS allows a local app to trigger an unexpected system termination or read kernel memory. Apple fixed it with improved bounds checking in macOS Golden Gate 27.2.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed macOS version under Apple menu > About This Mac, or run `sw_vers -productVersion` in Terminal.
- Confirm whether the Mac is running a build older than macOS Golden Gate 27.2.

## Fix

- Update macOS to `27.2` (macOS Golden Gate) or later via System Settings > General > Software Update.

## From the sources

An out-of-bounds read was addressed with improved bounds checking. This issue is fixed in macOS Golden Gate 27.2. An app may be able to cause unexpected system termination or read kernel memory.
