# Apple iOS and iPadOS: null pointer dereference enables denial-of-service from nearby

A null pointer dereference in iOS and iPadOS can crash the operating system or an app. An attacker in physical proximity can cause a denial-of-service, and the sources describe no code execution.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Open Settings > General > About on each iPhone or iPad and read the iOS or iPadOS version.
- Check the reported version against `26.7.2` (iOS/iPadOS 26 line) or `27.2` (iOS/iPadOS 27 line).

## Fix

- Update iOS and iPadOS to `26.7.2` on the 26 line, or to `27.2` on the 27 line.

## Timeline

## From the sources

A null pointer dereference was addressed with improved validation. This issue is fixed in iOS 26.7.2 and iPadOS 26.7.2, iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2. An attacker in physical proximity may be able to cause a denial-of-service.
