# GeoDirectory WordPress plugin: post badge shortcode enables stored cross-site scripting

The GeoDirectory WordPress plugin before 2.8.196 fails to escape a post badge shortcode attribute placed inside an inline JavaScript event handler. A user with the Contributor role or above can store a script that runs in the browser of anyone who clicks the badge, including administrators.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed GeoDirectory plugin version in the WordPress admin Plugins screen or with `wp plugin get geodirectory --field=version`
- Confirm whether the post badge shortcode is used on the site, which the sources do not describe further

## Fix

- Update the GeoDirectory plugin to `2.8.196` or later
- Review posts by Contributor-level users for unexpected content in badge shortcode attributes

## Timeline

- 2026-10-28T06:31:27+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-113488

## From the sources

The GeoDirectory WordPress plugin before 2.8.196 does not properly escape a post badge shortcode attribute for a JavaScript context before placing it in an inline event handler, allowing users with the Contributor role and above to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks against anyone who clicks the badge, including administrators.
