# Depicter Popup WordPress plugin: file upload check lets editors run code

The Depicter Popup and Slider Builder WordPress plugin before 4.8.2 checks only the client-supplied MIME type and a case-sensitive .php extension block on its editor media upload endpoint. An editor-level user can upload files with other active extensions into the public uploads directory, which allows stored script execution and possibly code execution on the server.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the installed Depicter version in the WordPress admin plugin list or with `wp plugin get depicter --field=version`
- Look for unexpected executable files (for example `.phtml`, `.php5`, `.phar` or mixed-case `.PHP`) under `wp-content/uploads`
- unknown whether the sources give a specific file path or log pattern to search for

## Fix

- Update the Depicter plugin to `4.8.2` or later
- Review user accounts with the Editor role and above, and remove any that are not needed

## From the sources

The Depicter — Popup & Slider Builder WordPress plugin before 4.8.2 does not properly validate uploaded files in its editor media-upload endpoint, checking only the client-supplied MIME type and a case-sensitive block of the .php extension, which allows users with the Editor role and above to upload files with other active extensions into the public uploads directory, leading to stored script execution in the site origin and, depending on the server's handler mapping, to code execution.
