# DrayTek Vigor2960 router: rename_table flaw allows remote command injection

The Rename Table handler in the web management CGI of DrayTek Vigor2960 1.5.1.6 does not sanitize the newtable argument, so command injection is possible. A remote attacker can run operating system commands on the router, and a public exploit exists.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the firmware version on the router's admin page or with `show version` over the console; the affected build is `1.5.1.6` Revision 8218
- Confirm whether the web management interface at /cgi-bin/mainfunction.cgi is reachable from the internet

## Fix

- Upgrade Vigor2960 firmware to `1.5.1.7` as the advisory suggests
- The vendor says the 2960 is end of support with limited fixes, so if no upgrade path remains, replace the device or restrict management access

## Timeline

## From the sources

A weakness has been identified in DrayTek Vigor2960 1.5.1.6 Revision 8218. The impacted element is the function rename_table of the file /cgi-bin/mainfunction.cgi of the component Rename Table Handler. This manipulation of the argument newtable causes command injection. The attack can be initiated remotely. The exploit has been made available to the public and could be used for attacks. Upgrading to version 1.5.1.7 is sufficient to resolve this issue. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component. The vendor explains: "2960 1.5.1.7 has corrected many security issues. And 2960 is EoS with limited support, only major issues would be reviewed(e.g. unauthenticated vuln.)". This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.
