# DrayTek Vigor2960 router: unrestricted file upload via mainfunction.cgi

DrayTek Vigor2960 firmware 1.5.1.6 Revision 8218 has a flaw in the commonupload component of /cgi-bin/mainfunction.cgi, where manipulating the upload_path and upload_name arguments allows unrestricted file upload. An attacker who reaches the device remotely can place files on it, and a public exploit exists.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Check the firmware version in the router admin UI under System Maintenance, or run `show version` on the device CLI, and look for `1.5.1.6` with Revision `8218`.
- Confirm whether the web admin interface is reachable from the internet.

## Fix

- Upgrade the Vigor2960 firmware to `1.5.1.7` or later, per the vendor advisory cited in the source.
- The vendor says the 2960 is end-of-support with limited fixes, so if no further patch is available, restrict or replace the device.

## From the sources

A vulnerability was determined in DrayTek Vigor2960 1.5.1.6 Revision 8218. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file /cgi-bin/mainfunction.cgi of the component commonupload. Executing a manipulation of the argument upload_path/upload_name can lead to unrestricted upload. The attack may be performed from remote. The exploit has been publicly disclosed and may be utilized. Upgrading to version 1.5.1.7 is capable of addressing this issue. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component. The vendor explains: "2960 1.5.1.7 has corrected many security issues. And 2960 is EoS with limited support, only major issues would be reviewed(e.g. unauthenticated vuln.)". This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.
