# Apple macOS: crafted file can crash an app via out-of-bounds write

An out-of-bounds write in an unnamed macOS component lets a maliciously crafted file terminate the app that processes it. The sources describe only an unexpected app termination, not code execution.

_Summary, check and fix written by a model from the sources; labelled as such._

## How to check

- Run `sw_vers -productVersion` and compare with the fixed releases: macOS Golden Gate `27.2`, macOS Sequoia `15.8.2`, macOS Tahoe `26.7.2`
- Check Software Update in System Settings for pending macOS updates

## Fix

- Update macOS to Golden Gate `27.2`, Sequoia `15.8.2`, or Tahoe `26.7.2`, whichever matches the installed major release

## Timeline

- 2026-10-26T21:20:27+00:00 nvd https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-112553

## From the sources

An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking. This issue is fixed in macOS Golden Gate 27.2, macOS Sequoia 15.8.2, macOS Tahoe 26.7.2. Processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to unexpected app termination.
